Sugarcane For Addis Ababa’s Sweet Tooth

It’s been six days now since the month of Yekatit officially stepped in. Addis Ababa is warm, bright and sunny than ever before. The everyday hustle and bustle of the city continued, so what more appropriate than sugar cane for Addis Ababa now?

“Shenkora” is the Amharic word for sugar cane. Though this one word sounds strong, for Ethiopians it perfectly represents this sweet Mother Nature’s gift. The carts of Addis are now busy with Shenkora and the sellers are also well equipped with their sharp knife to serve their customers of course, beneath the strong sun of Addis Ababa.

With all its benefits, sweetness and even in spite of it’s inconveniency to enjoy it right away; nothing stops Addis to have Shenkora, though, the fact that in Ethiopia it consumed in raw.

Even people who are not interested in street stand eateries, grab Shenkora from the street of Addis the only place you can find it, take it home, clean it, cut it into pieces and consume it raw.

Though, it’s not common, these days few juice places start serving sugarcane juice in the city of Addis Ababa but many people who had it, told me it’s not the same like enjoying sugar cane till its very last drop as it is and they also said that it is the best way we Ethiopians know how which is so Satisfying.

Besides beating sweet tooth in the very health way, Addis Ababa is getting all the benefits of Sugarcane and studies shows that; sugar cane help hydrate the body quickly, especially if you have been exposed to heat and physical activity for too long.  Being hydrated and energized in the capital city of Africa during this time of year helps so…
